Whaleback Natural Area

Natural or Wildlife Viewing Features: Natural Area

Whaleback's great attributes include spectacular views from its towering bluffs above Lake Michigan, varied terrain which hosts unusual communities of plants and wildlife, and a location within easy walking distance of the village of Leland. The trail is well-groomed and easy to follow, however, it can be a challenging hike with the steep access trail to the flat 3/4 mile hilltop loop. There is an info kiosk at the trailhead and benches along the steep trail.

To get there from the junction of M-22 and M-204 (3 mi S. of Leland), take M-22 north approx. 1 mile. A sign on the west (left) side of M-22 marks the entrance to the parking area. Continue straight for a few hundred feet on the gravel road entrance to the parking area. Follow the marked trail through private property to the natural area.

1.5 hours, challenging hike, steep access trail to flat 3/4 mile hilltop loop. Info kiosk at trailhead, benches along steep trail. - See more at: http://leelanauconservancy.org/naturalarea/whaleback-natural-area/#sthash.rhfag7FY.dpuf
