  • Organization: Little Traverse Conservancy
  • Trail Website:

The 223-acre Susan Creek Nature Preserve has a mix of habitat types and close to a mile of frontage on Susan Creek. The trail passes through hardwood forests, wet meadows, black ash swamp, and cedar forests. There are two foot bridges for crossing Susan Creek.

Adjacent to this Little Traverse Conservancy property is the Taimi Hoag Nature Preserve, a 55-acre parcel owned and managed by the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. Combined, the two properties offer over two miles of trail and are most commonly used for hiking. During the winter months, there are opportunities for easy cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. The trails are not groomed.

The preserve also has nearly a mile of frontage along the scenic US-31 corridor between Charlevoix and Petoskey. The entrance and parking for Susan Creek is on the south side of US-31. Just a few hundred yards north of the entrance and across US-31 is The Little Traverse Wheelway.

This is a Primary Site on the Sunset Coast Birding Trail. For more information about birding opportunities at this site and others in coastal northwest lower Michigan, go to
